Natural gas prices in Alberta fluctuate daily and are a function of the balance between supply and demand. 

If you have an elevated risk tolerance, you may elect to be supplied by Athena Energy at the variable price (spot) in Alberta, according to various published indices.  These index prices are usually different than those charged by the distributor.  For example, since 2001, Athena Energy’s variable price for a typical client has been $0.06/GJ (0.25 ¢/m³) cheaper than the Gaz Métro average reference price.

Plus, using this strategy, you always have the option of converting the variable price into fixed at any time.  You therefore have complete control over your expenses, which is not the case when being supplied by the distributor (system gas).
